The Academy announced today the creation of an annual competition Oscar Award for Achievement in Stunt Design, beginning with films released in 2027.
Director/Producer David Leitch led the charge on behalf of the stunt community to finally be recognized for their work in films.

Since the very beginning action and designed stunts have been an integral part of filmmaking. From Buster Keston and the Keystone Cops to the earliest Westerns, and the latest Mission Impossible, stunts are a major generator of box office attendance.
According to Janet Yang, President of the Academy, "We are proud to honor the innovative work of the technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion."

The last new Award category created was Achievement in Casting, established in 2024, beginning with the 2025 Oscar ceremonies.

This was a long-awaited Award category that should have been Oscar-worthy years ago. Regardless it is now etched in stone and the Oscar for Best Stunt will finally be bestowed each year.
